The RFID tag carries only minimal data – the EPC code – which enables immediate identification of what the product is and where it came from. More importantly it points back through the network to information directly retrievable from the supplier. The EPC code provides access to a remote location where detailed information about each individual product can be found – this can be in a managed data pool or a repository at the supplier.

The Cactus Commerce RFID Accelerator Framework comes with EPC Information (EPCis) functionality built into the base product which allows organizations to quickly and efficiently: consume, store, manage and utilize RFID data. EPCis functionality includes the ability to:

• Search on specific EPC attributes/metadata,
• Associate EPC data to other data sources (product, bill of materials, order)
• Forward EPC data to trade partners (Order fulfillment data)
• Receive EPC data from trade partners (automated EPC/EDI messages)
• Interpret EPC data in particular business contexts to run specific business rules.
