Everybody wants to save money. The phenomenal success of daily discount sites such as Groupon and Living Social draws on a shopper’s inherent desire to score an amazing deal – even if it’s on a product they might not necessarily have purchased in the first place. Case in point, the adorable pair of little sandals I bought last week with WagJag. Not because my little girl desperately needed new shoes, but they were over half off and they squeak!
Making it even easier to spend (I mean, save) money, is the proliferation of location based deals that allow mobile users to check in as they...

At the end of 2010, Google launched Boutiques.com – a personalized online fashion experience that allows users to create a profile of the styles, colors, and designers that they love in order to create their own customized boutique. The site is easy to use and includes a fun Stylyzer Quiz, and provides the ability to easily refine searches by genre, silhouette, pattern and color.
From a shopper’s perspective, Boutiques is unique (and did I mention fun?) in that the site “learns” what a user prefers and makes recommendations based on search algorithms and machine learning technology. A sear...

I admit I’m turning into a little bit of a Groupon groupie. Each morning I eagerly check my inbox to find out the daily deal in my area. Groupon is a group-buying site that is reportedly valued now at $1 billion. The concept is simple, if a minimum number of people sign up for the daily deal then they will receive the discount. Typically the deals are locally-based offers from small to medium size businesses. And hey, who doesn’t like a great deal on a mani-pedi at the local spa? But today’s offer was far from a local deal, but a unique offer from Gap - $25 for $50 worth of merchandise at ...

The whole concept of interactive engagement with customers via social media is changing so fast these days, it can be hard for brands to keep up. Just when you get your Facebook fan page going, and start sharing deals and discounts to Foursquare users, you discover there is another digital media tool or trend taking hold.
One such service is Stickybits, a mobile app that allows iPhone and Android users to scan or create a barcode and then attach a digital file to it. That file could be anything - video, text, photos or music. The Stickybits service is an intriguing concept that could have...

In the retail world, merchandising is crucial to maximizing sales through proper design, display, pricing and discounting. Online retailers have had many years of experience in testing and refining merchandising for e-commerce.
With the proliferation and adoption of smart phones, retailers are now faced with the challenge of once again adapting merchandising for the mobile experience. Not an easy task when you consider the limitations presented by the smaller interface.
The launch of new devices with improved form factors such as the iPad or Microsoft’s recently announced Courier pr...

We recently sponsored a webinar on e-commerce content management where Brian Walker of Forrester Research delivered some interesting insights into consumer demands and how this demand puts pressure on merchant strategies to deliver content across the multi-channel shopping environment.
In this webinar we learned that consumers are not only shopping across channels but are using more and more devices to do so, even in-store. Consumer interest in self-service devices such as scanners attached to a shopping cart, self check-out aisles, and in-store kiosks for coupons or accessing the company...

I just got back from the Shop.org Annual Summit in Las Vegas, where we, Cactus Commerce, launched our new CommerceLive solution. Billed as the conference requiring ‘Mandatory Attendance’ it certainly was the mandatory event to be at this year. This blog post is a bit long, but there was really so much valuable information at the show, I wanted to capture and share some of it.
According to Rich Last, Chairman of Shop.org and VP at JC Penney, there was a record crowd, with more than 2600 attendees and 150 exhibitors. Interestingly there were 16% more retail attendees, backing up his st...
