Over on Mashable.com, Ben Parr gives an overview of Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker's presentation at the Web 2.0 Summit on Internet trends and the future of the mobile web.

The presentation is quite long - 68 slides - but provides some key findings that could impact social and mobile commerce in the years ahead.

Since all the data and forecasting is provided within the presentation, I'll just highlight the key trends Mary identifies:

  • Mobile Internet usage is and will be bigger than most think
  • Apple mobile share is driving the platform change from desktop to mobile and should surprise on upside near term
  • Next generation platforms (social networking + mobile) driving unprecedented change in communications
  • Mobile in Japan + Desktop Internet provide roadmaps for mobile growth + monetization
  • 3G adoption / trends vary by geography
  • Carriers in USA / western Europe face surging network demand but uncertain economics
  • Regulators can help advance / slow mobile Internet evolution
  • Mobile-related share shifts will create / destroy material shareholder wealth

With the expected number of mobile data users to reach a staggering 1 billion by 2013, mobile Internet usage has already outpaced desktop Internet adoption. It is changing the way people communicate and empowering consumers in unprecedented ways. This impact provides new opportunities and challenges for vendors and other key players in the mobile industry.

As well, the emergence of location-based services on mobile devices creates opportunities to engage consumers any where and any time they want. For ecommerce vendors, this requires smart planning and investment in social and mobile commerce efforts, including strategic consideration of SEO tactics, the use of wireless application protocol-formatted landing pages that can easily be viewed via mobile devices, and of course community-building tactics centred around your brand.
